Because it’s Friday: 952 in your head

Countdown is one of those quintessentially British shows that I can't imagine anywhere else. (Reading the Wikipedia article just now I learned that it started as a French show, which I can well imagine, but I warrant it lacks the essential earnestness of the British version.) If you haven't seen it, it's a game show where contestants solve arithmetic and word puzzles in pursuit of some ludicrously trivial prize, like a teapot. (I may be misremembering that last bit.) You might have seen the word puzzle in a segment on The IT Crowd, and this numbers game effort is truly impressive:

(If you think you have a better solution, remember that you can only use each drawn number once.) I don't remember Carol Vorderman ever making an arithmetic error or getting stumped when I watched Countdown in the UK in the 90s, so her call for a calculator makes this clip doubly impressive!

That's all for this week. We'll be back with more for the blog next week — have a great weekend!
